本書初稿完成於一九九○年五月，從一九九○年六月至今，香港《當代》雜誌、美國《北京之春》月刊、美國《世界日報》主辦的《世界周刊》、加拿大明鏡出版社出版的《浴火重生——「天安門黑手」備忘錄》一書，先後摘錄發表了本書稿一萬餘字的內容，題爲〈天安門廣場清場紀實〉或〈天安門事件的最後一幕〉。
本書不僅完整地記錄了一九八九年天安門廣場武力清場行動的整個過程，而且對一些重要的事件和人物作了具體而突出的描述，例如：劉曉波、侯德健、周舵、高新等「絕食四君子」於一九八九年六月四日凌晨與解放軍戒嚴部隊的接觸談判情況；柴玲、李錄、封從德等保衛天安門廣場學生指揮部的學生領袖從拒絕撤離天安門廣場到決定撤離天安門廣場的過程；六部坦克追逐輾壓學生撤退隊伍事件；學生領袖郭海峰「企圖燒毀天安門城樓」一案的真相；醫務人員在槍林彈雨中捨生忘死搶救受傷者、記者冒著生命危險記錄歷史真相的英勇事蹟；積極抗命的解放軍陸軍第38集團軍軍長徐勤先和消極抗命的解放軍陸軍第39集團軍步兵第116師師長許峰的故事；立功受獎、升官晉級的解放軍戒嚴部隊官兵……等等。
