Benny Tai’s Thinking Hong Kong Series (a collection of six volumes) provides a comprehensive explanation of the philosophy behind the "Occupy Central with Love and Peace" movement. Through titles such as Reflections under Authoritarianism, Resistance, and The Offence of Sharing Hope: Reflections on Hope (a self-defense speech in court), the series articulates the ideas and principles underpinning the movement.
On 16 January 2013, the author published an article titled The Most Lethal Weapon of Civil Disobedience in Hong Kong Economic Journal, which marked the beginning of the Occupy Central movement. Together with Professor Chan Kin-man, Reverend Chu Yiu-ming, and six other co-defendants, Benny Tai was prosecuted for their involvement in the movement. During the trial, Tai delivered a closing statement in court titled First Speech, Final Lesson. This statement serves as a reflection and summary of his six years of using civil disobedience to advocate for democracy in Hong Kong. In this speech, Tai attempted to intertwine legal arguments, political convictions, moral appeals, and calls of faith—a synthesis of the experiences and insights he personally encountered throughout these years.
