二十年前，北京一批大學生，以悼念胡耀邦為觸發點的活動，演化為民運。學生、知識分子和新聞界，要求民主改革、反貪腐、反官倒、要求讓新聞界說真話。運動的結局，大家都很清楚了，但二十年前學生、老、 中、青知識分子，以生命追求的變革，今天有沒有實現呢？今天的中國，有沒有比廿年前更開放、民主、廉潔？傅媒自由度，有沒有比廿年前多了，還是少了？
作者零八年底在美國訪問了一批流亡海外的學生、學者、以及一位仍然身在國內的前學運領袖，還有在香港的前黄雀行動執行人。
廿年，他們際遇各異，有人繼續努力對中國國情研究，有人成為了銀行僱員、維權律師、傳道人。他們的故事，有血腥、暴力、悲情、浪漫，有些很恩雨之聲、有些很國產凌凌漆。
對廿年前的運動，是否不夠「策略」、不夠妥協，致流血收場，各人有不同看法，但有兩點相同的：一、他們都仍熱愛祖國、心懷祖國。二、很巧合地，大家都認為，開槍的結果令聰明的中國人更專心一意努力向錢看，為了錢甚麼道德都可以不顧，至於政治改革、為民請命這些摩登玩意，就更别談了。
作者期望通過這些訪談，透過他們的故事和心聲，重看影響近代中國歷史一次重要事件，分享他們對祖國的檢視和期望。
Twenty years ago, a group of college students in Beijing started an activity triggered by commemorating Hu Yaobang, which evolved into a pro-democracy movement. Students, intellectuals and the press demand democratic reform, fight against corruption and official corruption, and demand that the press tell the truth. Everyone knows the outcome of the movement, but have the changes that students, old, middle-aged and young intellectuals pursued with their lives twenty years ago been realized today? Is China more open, democratic, and clean today than it was 20 years ago? Is there more freedom for media outlets than there was 20 years ago, or less?
The author visited a group of exiled students and scholars in the United States at the end of 2008, as well as a former student movement leader who is still in China, and the former executor of Operation Yellow Bird in Hong Kong.
The author hopes that through these interviews, their stories and voices, we can re-examine an important event that affected modern Chinese history, and share their views and expectations for the motherland.
