From 2010 to 2012, photographer Ki Wong and her partners initiated the KLACK Photography and Culture Magazine, which had four semi-annual issues to explore different themes such as intimacy and salon photography.
On Intimacy — To Reveal or to Conceal
How can a photograph evoke resonance? One key factor is its ability to stir the viewer’s emotions. Among the most powerful and enduring images are those that express human vulnerability and desire—such as photos of war, love (in all its forms: familial, platonic, and romantic), sexuality, and death.
This issue of KLACK takes on a more emotional tone—we’re talking about feelings.
We’ve held many editorial meetings discussing what makes an image feel emotionally resonant, attempting to define our focus and establish some kind of framework. From the aestheticism of salon photography, to the sensationalism of photojournalism, to documentary-style depictions of daily life and private snapshots—the scope was initially too broad to clearly articulate how photography conveys emotion.
So instead, we turned our attention to everyday life. We explore how emotions emerge from intimate relationships between people, or between people and objects, as seen through both the images themselves and the act of taking them. Two feature pieces, Flickr-ing and Family Portraits, are central to this exploration.
The genre of Intimate Photography, led by figures such as Nan Goldin, revolutionized how people approached photography in the 1980s. She captured spontaneous moments of daily life—turning the camera into a visual diary that recorded anything that moved her deeply. Her work helped people realize that any moment or aspect of life, no matter how mundane, can be meaningfully documented.
