Wang Dan, one of the leaders of the Chinese pro-democracy movement in 1989, was arrested and imprisoned after the Tiananmen Incident and spent three years and seven months in prison. Wang Dan describes his miserable life in prison in this book, his encounters and mental journey under the bars show his unremitting struggle for freedom and democracy, as well as the huge price he paid for it.

Through this book, we see a 21-year-old Peking University student who perseveres and devotes himself to the pursuit of his ideals. We also see a mother who always supports her son and accompanies Wang Dan through this long and painful journey with family affection and no resentment.

When this book was published, Wang Dan was once again in jail and was sent to prison far away from Beijing to serve his sentence. From Qincheng to Tiezhou, freedom was imprisoned, family ties were cut off, andThis book is the first complete personal memoir of Wang Dan, the leader of the June Fourth democracy movement. By reviewing his diaries from childhood to adulthood, every turning point in his life is combed through. The book begins with Wang Dan’s childhood experience, and how he joined the Communist Youth League in middle school and enjoyed the wonderful time of China’s reform and opening up period in the 1980s. In high school, he was inspired by a book and he started questioning his loyalty to the Communist Party. He then became a propagandist of democratic thoughts on the campus of Peking University. Later, he became one of the leaders of the 1989 student movement, and his life also underwent tremendous changes.

In this book, Wang Dan not only reveals his own growth and mental journey, but also attempts to fulfill his historical responsibility as an important member of the "June Fourth Movement" by presenting a complete picture of his personal memory - to restore what he personally knows. He used this perspective to write about the "June 4th Incident" and the complete process of his being imprisoned and released for the "June 4th Incident", his re-imprisonment for the pro-democracy movement, and his subsequent ten-year exile in the United States. Through this book, what Wang Dan wants to convey is the experience that a person like him has witnessed in a country.
