Wang Dan, one of the leaders of the Chinese pro-democracy movement in 1989, was arrested and imprisoned after the Tiananmen Incident and spent three years and seven months in prison. Wang Dan describes his miserable life in prison in this book, his encounters and mental journey under the bars show his unremitting struggle for freedom and democracy, as well as the huge price he paid for it.

Through this book, we see a 21-year-old Peking University student who perseveres and devotes himself to the pursuit of his ideals. We also see a mother who always supports her son and accompanies Wang Dan through this long and painful journey with family affection and no resentment.

When this book was published, Wang Dan was once again in jail and was sent to prison far away from Beijing to serve his sentence. From Qincheng to Tiezhou, freedom was imprisoned, family ties were cut off, and youth was tempered.
