在不斷舊區重建的城市中，我們對拆舊樓、起新樓已經習以為常，藝術村似乎是很新鮮的概念，因為我們還未習慣公共藝術，還有就是我們見慣了舊區變新樓。其實，香港的藝術村也不是新鮮事物，它已經存在了20多年了，最初在北角油街，後來還租用了馬頭角的牛棚。當然，與西方的藝術家村對比，也不過小巫見大巫了，歐洲最早的藝術家村是領主貴族的屬地，二戰後以美國為主的都市發展，亦促成不少藝術佔據舊區樓宇，發展成完全自治的藝術家團體。
陳惠儀的《香港第一個藝術村﹕油街與牛棚》，從藝術村的概念與源起，談到香港最早期藝術村油街與牛棚設立的過程，作者還訪問了管理及進駐的藝術家如油街、牛棚及富德樓的開拓者馮美華、前進進牛棚劇場的陳炳釗、行為藝術家蛙王(郭孟浩)等。這些藝術家所做的事情，社會大眾未必明白，而在寸金尺土的香港，為藝術村爭取一席之地，無疑有點像「與虎謀皮」。在香港經濟型態型態下，土地從來都是由政府劃給財團興建毫宅商場，由政府興建公屋，或予公營團體興建學校醫院及其他社會設施，因此沒有人會想到藝術家也應該可以擁有工作室或專屬場地。
本書分為四章：一、藝術村概念簡述；二、牛棚前身——油街藝術村短短兩年的崛起與沉寂；三、十二位駐牛棚藝術的口述歷史；四、作者分析牛棚的管理政策及長遠發展。
The book is divided into four chapters. Starting with a brief introduction to the artist village, the rise and fall of the pioneer artist village in Hong Kong, Oil Street is also illustrated. The author examined the management and talked about the long-term growth of Cattle Depot after interviewing 12 artists after they relocated there. Having the experience of working here, she made clear and thorough views about the future growth of this one and only artist village. Yet, it’s a thesis rewrite, it won’t be relaxing to read although it’s not difficult to understand. Interested readers can begin with the part of the interview, which presents what drives artists to stay here solely out of a passion for this place.
