In post-war Hong Kong, residents generally lived a difficult life. The fire at Six Estates in Shek Kip Mei on Christmas Eve in 1953 put the victims of the Shek Kip Mei squatter area into misery and difficulties. In 2007, all the old resettlement buildings in Shek Kip Mei were demolished, leaving 41 Mei Ho Houses as revitalized heritage sites. The Hong Kong Youth Hostels Association is responsible for the revitalization project of Mei Ho House. Mei Ho House will be transformed into a youth hostel in 2012, and a living pavilion will be built to showcase the life of the old residents of Shek Kip Mei and Sham Shui Po districts.
